Dr Christina from Montville Body Balance explains...
What is Hypnotherapy?
Your unconscious mind is actually in control of you, through generating feelings and urges. You sense this in the behaviours you generate, like biting your nails, puffing away, binge drinking, indulging in the wrong foods, experiencing panic, or getting blue, but it can’t hear you when you ask it to stop. Christina can help with the translation. This is true for anxiety/ depression related behaviours and for simple habits. But if you come for hypnotherapy, you need to be ready to let go of old habits because hypnotherapy is not mind control. Rather, it provides a break in the old mental conditioning to allow you to make more useful choices.
Some people think of hypnosis as an alternative therapy, but hypnosis is completely natural, making use of a natural state of being. Sometimes people say they cannot be hypnotised. However, it only requires a light trance in order for hypnosis to be effective. The deeper you go, the more relaxing you find the experience and the more you do hypnosis, the deeper you go.
Everyone can be hypnotised, just like when you are driving that same old route and your mind switches off temporarily, leaving the driving to your unconscious. That happens because you know where you are and where you are going. It is safe for you to temporarily switch off and start thinking about your weekend or your holiday. What you are doing when you switch off, is actually hypnosis, because you are giving your unconscious mind permission to take the driver’s seat.
Some people who have never had hypnosis before might comment, “That was weird, I could hear everything you said clearly, but I couldn’t move my body”. This is what we call a light trance like state.
Hypnosis is about developing your focus in helpful directions, rather than unhelpful directions. It guides you to work with what’s possible, rather than getting stuck in how things used to be. This way you can enhance your experience of life physically, emotionally and mentally.
Hypnosis can be surface level, or it can get to the root of the issue. It depends on your readiness to engage in the process. If, for example, a smoker comes in for hypnosis but chooses not to explore a low sense of self-worth, which may be perpetuating the problem, then the smoking may be alleviated with hypnosis, until the next time that low self-worth is triggered. This is just an example. The underlying cause could be anything. It could be a harmful belief or a past event that initiated a negative feeling that led to a problem behaviour.
Sometimes the problem is just a simple habit. In these cases, the hypnosis also requires your engagement in order to retrain your brain and break old patterns, with the techniques that Christina will give you.
Christina will explore your issue through the initial conversation, honing in on the unconscious expression of the problem. This is a very individualised process. Then she uses relaxation to prime your unconscious mind to accept positive suggestions specific for you. This will take you into a state between wake and sleep where Christina can guide your unconscious mind to responding differently to old ‘triggers’.
Christina incorporates timeline therapy and neuro linguistic programming into the session, depending on the issue. Timeline therapy is a guided journey back into the past where the original problem emotions first appeared. From this original emotion, your unconscious mind created a pattern. Once this original emotion is resolved, your unconscious mind has a more useful version of the past to draw upon, which breaks the pattern and releases the problem. Timeline is an in-depth process where you are in a lighter state of trance than hypnosis, and where you are more involved in the process. Timeline is actually an NLP technique.
Neuro linguistic programming (NLP)
Christina uses NLP methods to understand how the problem behaviour is playing out, and how your unconscious mind is making sense of it. She does this through examining how you perceive the issue, literally – What colour is it? Is it moving or still? Etcetera. NLP also explores other mind exercises that guide you to make changes to the way you interpret the problem. This then affects the way you feel about the problem.
Through NLP Christina can recognise your current behavioural patterns and replace them with better patterns. NLP works on many levels but briefly, it can:
Christina offers effective, professional clinical hypnotherapy. She holds membership with the Australian Hypnotherapists Association and the Australian Association of Clinical Hypnotherapy & Psychotherapy Inc. As such, she is insured, accredited and bound by ethics and guidelines in helping you to achieve your aims.
Christina has years of prior experience working with a range of people and problems in physical and mental health, through university and hospital settings. She earned her Doctor of Education (educational psychology) in 2012 from the University of Technology Sydney with a thesis exploring how people successfully create a positive lifestyle change. Along with mastery-level training in the working of the unconscious mind, Christina translates this knowledge to help you better, through hypnotherapy.
Who Should Try Hypnotherapy?
You should try hypnosis if:
If your problem is psychologically based (for example, you are indulging in the wrong foods), and there is no medical reason for it (for example, you do not have a thyroid disorder that makes you put on weight).
You are of of sound mind. That means that you do not suffer from psychosis (for example, schizophrenia) and you are not on anti-psychotic drugs.
You are aged 16 years and over
You are ready to commit to healing – hypnotherapy is not mind control. You need to collaborate with Christina on resolving your issue.
Who Should Not Try Hypnotherapy?
Are you taking prescribed anti-psychotic drugs? Have you been diagnosed with bipolar, schizophrenia, are experiencing psychotic episodes, or identify as a drug addict? Do you experience hallucinations (seeing, hearing things that are not there), believe things that are not actually true (delusions), or have difficulty distinguishing your own thoughts from reality? If so, you need to consult a medical doctor because hypnotherapy is contraindicated in these cases and unfortunately Christina cannot help you. Also, if you experience epilepsy, hypnosis can actually trigger the condition, so again, hypnotherapy is contraindicated.
If you are feeling suicidal, please do not hesitate to see your GP, Psychiatrist or call Lifeline on 131114.
Christina also warns against using hypnotherapy to try to erase memories, for example, an ex-partner. This often does more harm as the unconscious mind is left with the problem. Christina reserves the right to refuse certain requests such as these.
What Types of Issues Can Hypnotherapy Treat?
Some of the most common problems that Christina treats includes:
Anxiety (social, generalised, panic attacks, PTSD, etcetera)
Nail Biting and Other Compulsions
Hypnotherapy can address any issue that is psychologically based. However Christina warns against using hypnotherapy to try to erase memories, for example, an ex-partner. This often does more harm as the unconscious mind is left with the problem. Christina reserves the right to refuse certain requests such as these.
Christina also offers Inner Guidance sessions which run from 1.5-3 hours. This is a complex process which takes the client through layers in a metaphysical landscape where they can explore different perspectives around a problem or a burning question, such as ‘Why am I here’, ‘Why do I keep attracting the same relationship issues’, ‘Why is there a theme of loss in my life’?
One of these layers is the past life realm, and so this process can be used as a past life regression, with added insights.
This process is most rewarding for people who are experienced in self-guided practice, or meditation.
How Long Does Hypnotherapy Take to Work?
For most conditions, Christina advises three sessions. Occasionally a problem will be resolved in one 90 minute session, depending on the person, but this is unusual. Sometimes, if the issue is severe trauma for example, the person may need up to six sessions.
Most clients notice a shift after session one. In some cases the person may not notice anything different until they are faced with challenges, and then they notice that they responded differently to before, calmer and more effectively. This is most common with anxiety or reactive depression.
